From a film set in Mumbai and a road trip across Spain, Zoya Akhtar took us on a super exciting journey aboard a cruise with the Mehra family and their friends, in Dil Dhadakne Do. And boy oh boy, did we fall in love with it all. Whether it's the dialogue (we're looking at you, Farhan Akhtar), the locations or even the actors who played their parts, there's something about the film that makes you want to go back and watch it over and over again. As DDD completes one year since its release, we tell you why we're so in love with it.
Kabir Mehra, nice to meet you
And it was indeed nice to meet Ranveer Singh as Kabir Mehra, the spoiled son of the illustrious Mehra family, who's got his heart in the right place. He was the soul of the film and made us root for him all through. We also love his brand of humour, whether it's the puke jokes or the butter knife suicide sequence.
My, my, Mehras
The Mehra family wasn't just any high-society family from Delhi. We find glimpses of our own parents and siblings in them. Whether it's the parents' arguments and banter or the siblings' cutesy fights and how they stand up for each other. It was all too relatable.
Ensemble, assemble
There wasn't one member of the cast out of place in the film. We all know the chatty aunties, the ones who are looking for prospective grooms for their daughters, the ones who give unwarranted advice and the ones who break it down on the dance floor. We also know the uncles, the ones who can't see eye to eye, the ones who love to boast about their success and the ones who drink like there's no tomorrow. Even the kids are just like us. They laugh at their parents' idiosyncrasies and have a few of their own. It's one big happy bunch, isn't it?
Feminism first
Few films can get their characters to explore feminist themes with such ease. The concept of daughters being "paraya dhan" was tackled as deftly as the control husbands exercise over their wives. And the men spoke out just as boldly as the women did. Ayesha Mehra not only became a role model figure, with her self made career and her brave choice to get out of a loveless marriage, but Sunny Gill, the hotshot journalist, shut down any kind of chauvinism he saw. Even Farah Ali showed us the courage it can take for a girl to leave her home and find her bearings in the world. Fearless Farah, indeed.
Gallan Goodiyaan
Because nothing, and we mean nothing, can stop us from taking the dance floor when this song comes on!
